Street art has no simple definition. As a visual art form found or inspired in urban settings, it continues to evolve through many incarnations. Amsterdam is a prime manifestation of this movement, as it offers a genre that is quite exclusive. Welcome to bicycle street art.
For many living in the city, the bicycle is simply a form of transportation. But some will also see it as a blank canvas and take the opportunity to show their personality with their rides. But this is hardly a new revelation in Amsterdam, because people don’t just ride bicycles, they live with them. As such, the bicycle has a unique symbiotic relationship with their owner.
With over a million bikes crammed into Amsterdam, it becomes inevitable that bicycle street art is inadvertently created. Of course, this could be up to interpretation. But I think this requires a keen eye, some imagination and a good camera.
