The mobile phone ban from the bike lane in Amsterdam poses a dilemma.
The new law that came into effect on July 1st, 2019 also applies to cameras. Sadly this would mean an end to my hobby of photographing bicyclists while riding a bike. Is it worth the risk to get a €95 fine while potentially being labelled a pariah?
The simple answer is yes.
Not because I’m some kind of rebel or scofflaw. But because bicyclists in Amsterdam have largely ignored the mobile phone ban. While some have made the effort to pull off to the side, there are people who still use their phone while cycling, even in high traffic areas.
This leads me to believe that this is really just a token gesture by the city, while giving law enforcement officials just cause to stop someone if they’re being reckless.
